From Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor by Rob Nixon

Posted by Tiara Smith on

In Nixon Piece “From Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor.” he starts a conversation on the reaction and actions caused by society that is ruled in a era of social media. He focuses on the slowly but damaging outcome that comes towards the environment as well as the people who live in these decaying areas. Nixon coins the phrase slow violence within this text to give insight to the readers just how important, it is to take violence of any kind seriously. Society is known for having generations of activist against any injustice, but environmental violence is so easily overlooked. This includes things such as climate change, population, oil spills, and even the destruction caused by warfare. All of these are issues that in the moment causes a huge amount of damage, but the longevity of these issues causes much more destruction.  This is the very argument that Nixon is trying to shed light on these actions become slow violence. What is very interesting about Nixon argument is the conversation that can be had about the disregard that society has for something that will not affect them any direct way.

People as a whole live in the moment our activist fights have to be in a sort time of us fighting against. Humans are victims of time we can’t spend our whole life fighting for something that wont effect us in our life time and our family lifetime by a hundred years gap. Its the same when science teachers would have these deep and series lessons on the fate of the sun dying out. The entire class would hang on the teachers every word only for the teacher to say “this won’t happen in a billions years.” Any ounce of passion for the conversation instant fades away and the class goes with their lives with the strong notion. Well thats not happen in my life not my problem and thats the end to the activist around our dying sun. “…the most pressing challenges of our age is how to adjust rapidly eroding attention spans to the slow erosions of environmental justice.”(Nixon,2363) Society has always had a history of caring about every other issues affecting humans buy somehow the fate of the environment we need to live on gets no attentions at all.

Not only is no real attention or care for the environment but this also extends to the unfortunate people who live in the bad state of our environment. People who are at the bottom of the hierarchy are the ones to be affected the most. Nixon eposes a well known figure in todays society in how he in one of his emails was cool with dumbing our waste into the African continent. This really just strengthen Nixon argument that society as a whole doesn’t care about things that has nothing to do with them. The environment is just one of the biggest outlet that stresses the slow violence’s that will continue to be a theme society will partake in.

The Interpretation of Dreams By Sigmund Freud

Posted by Tiara Smith on

In a piece called “The Interpretation of Dreams” by Sigmund Freud he introduces a revolting connection. To the a complex known as the Oedipus which relates to the content and structure of dreams. The Oedipus complex is when a child has anger for their same sex parents but have feelings of pure desire for the opposite sex parent. Their are two discussions that can be had through Freud ideology based on the Oedipus complex. The first one being is that dream themselves are seen as something that is to reveled a person deepest desires as express by Freud. When people find themselves longing for something in the physical world then it transported into the psychic. Freud strongly believes that dreams are the sole credit to tell what is one desires. To prove this he uses the weird topic of a child desires and emotions to their own parents. Their is a strange truth to this stance Freud stands by their is a discussion that Men tend to like/be with women that resemble their mother, Women are drawn to men who are like their dad.

Just like Freud that question is ask what is the reason behind this? Are the men and women who are like this have some deep attraction for their parents as Freud insist. Which leads to another structures of dreams the two terms are displacements and condensation. These two terms are meant to keep at bay our desires so that we don’t act upon them. “In the process of transforming the latent thoughts into the manifest content of a dream we have found two factors at work: dream-condensation and dream-displacements”(795)When it comes to Condensation Freud describes as when a multitude of thoughts and images are fused into one single dream image. Displacement is when emotions are all of sudden shifted to something else in a dream, a necklace belonging to your late mother and that feeling being projected on a book.

Dreams are thoughts put in a situation of fiction. What people dream are the things we found in our life and that doesn’t always means a person has desires or want to do certain things. Its more about how our dreams are gateway or beginnings to make these dreams a reality. “Each train of thought is almost invariably accompanied by its contradictory counterpart, linked with it by antithetical association.”(795)  Freud admits that dreams are not all based in some type of desires or needs but that desire of something is more than a fruitless dream. Even when you don’t dream of anything pertaining to your desires their is still another side of that dream that has of Easter egg of it roaming around.

Althusser(Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses

Posted by Tiara Smith on

In the work By Louis Althusser “Ideology and and Ideological State Apparatuses” he makes the strong argument that society is not only heavily dependent, on Ideology its can be broken down in to two category.  These category are RAS which stands for Repressive State Apparatuses and ISA which stands for Ideological Sate Apparatuses. Without them then society starts to fail their would be a huge shift in the power structure of laws, policies, schools, teaching, and more. When it comes to how RAS fits into society Althusser states that its connected with the higher powers that rule over the lower powers. The higher powers are the government, military, courts, and police force.  The ideology that are express within are a universal morality that everyone must follow we look to them as the base of how our society is kept afloat. The negative aspect of this is that the RAS higher power can set the rules that the lower class has to power to change. Take the government its; filled with an abundance of corruption with its officials and laws. Being able to enact injustices against the working class with zero consequences even getting away with the law when these corrupt officials in government are tried for their crimes.  Althusser sees the RAS class as the ideologies built on oppressions through violence enacted on the common people of society. Even if violence can be found in these systems their a deep rooted control of people that can be found being done by structures fall under the RAS category.

The next one is ISA this is the ideologies that belong to the people in places where the working class is found living their experience within their own freedom of ideology.  Examples of this are school, church, social media, etc. this has power different from RAS on more a social standpoint. RAS controls society has a whole but ISA has a hold on a chunk of society that a different ideology finds its self being practices by. An example of this is Gender Ideology being taught in school their is a huge argument over that because society is trying to dismantle the gender norms we have place.  Althusser states that ISA does not use violence for its ideology like RAS its behavior is to just dismantle and create a new ideology to become the dominants one in the lower class. Althusser ends his piece with the finally conclusion that ideology and all its traits negative or positive must exist to that society can exist and function.

The German Ideology

Posted by Tiara Smith on

In the text called ‘The German Ideology” Marx and Engel go to discuss how the human consciousness is shaped by reality they live in. They both go on to connect how the labor class is connected to idea that is discuss in the text. With what I could understand from the text the main theme of it is that everything that is born from the mind is not a origin thought. The things we create or come to develop as ideas and knowledge are purely shape by the life we in. The very structure of society is the one that does all of the heavy lifting we as humans just take what is already giving to us. And create another story to which already exist. “Conceiving, thinking the mental intercourse of men, appear at this stage as the direct efflux of their material behavior.”(659)  This quote from the essay shows me that the mind of mankind are in connection with their natural behavior. Our actions reflects our mind how it is shape defends on where we are at in the social class in society.

Take a person who is deep in their faith they will make their entire thoughts and consciousness surrounding around God and the bible. Why because its the reality of that person the life they have around God will forever impact the thoughts, ideas, and action they do. Another example is that is the opposite to a person of God is an atheist all of their ideas/ideology will focus and only be formed based on. Them trying to disprove the existence of God or breaking down the structure of religion in society. I would say based on the ideas Marx and Engel explore that the very thing we call the consciousness would still be formed by itself without the reality of a person life to a certain extent. People do have a certain power to their own thoughts and how they are formed Marx and Engel admit to this idea as being true reasons for the connection of the mind to life. “Life is not determined by consciousness, but consciousness by life.”(660) This simple sentences sums up the entire argument of Marx and Engel aside from the production that comes from labor. That our entire way of thoughts and ideas are fueled by the very existence of life our consciousness are before life not after. Every single ideal is formed by the perception of the mind has on it not by the power alone of the person thoughts on it.

On Truth and Lying in a Nonmoral Sense

Posted by Tiara Smith on

Nietzsche essay the “On Truth and Lying in a Nonmoral Sense” he explores many different topics on the mental state of human kind. The one that carries more truth today is the behavior towards truth and how society responds when certain truths are presented to them. People have their own truth and they will follow that and disregard another facts that are presented. This is purely delusion at its finest too many people in our world. Hold on so strongly to their opinion which are truth to them. They are unable to have space for new information that can break down or offer a new view point, to their truth. The so called mature responses to people on the opposite side challenging the truth of the opposing. Is to just insult them or rudely disregard what their saying no matter how much truth was in it.
Nietzsche shows us why human are prone to acting this way. The actions of lies, greed, delusion, anger, or insanity are just a few of why people do this. Although delusion and maybe even stubbornness are really the main reason to denied the truth. People can’t stand when you burst their mental bubble. When you break the structure they have held on to for so long. No one likes to be wrong or made to feel stupid people will sacrifice the truth. Along with their integrity about the truth to safe face. They will go to the extreme to protect a truth which is a lie and will even go far to make the life of the Speaking the truth a living hell.
Now where Nietzsche theory on the truth lands on is  what is truth really to us. In the realm of personal truths that can’t really be explained by facts. Take religion a perfect example of peoples truth on the existence of a celestial being known as God. They have their beliefs which are translated to truth. Many people in this world would disagree with them on how they behave with the truth of their choice of religion. How can they prove it ? Or how can they be sure that is the truth? Is the question many non believers have for people who followed some type of religion. The conversations that comes with the question of people religion truths. Is the same things Nietzsche is conveying in his essay. The behavior and actions towards what people deemed at the truth.
